Walking through 100 Years of Czech & Slovak Graphic Design at TDM
From Mucha to Contemporary New Designers Dialogue of Graphic Designs across Centuries

Based on the evolution of graphic design in Czech and Slovak, the curatorial team uses “decade” as the unit to display posters, illustrations, books, and promotional materials of different generations, reflecting historical situations and art incidents through the exhibits. The most eye-catching exhibits among all are the graphic designs by mid-19th century Czech artist Alphonse Mucha (1860-1939). His fusion of artistic and commercial styles became the paradigm of Art Nouveau. Entering the 21st century, the development of Czech and Slovak graphic design has become more robust and diverse, and citizens can probe into contemporary design vocabulary through the works of new designers.

The Graphic Design Biennial with the Longest History Classic Works on Display in Taiwan

“International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno” was inaugurated in 1963; having the longest history, it is also the most prestigious graphic design competition. Through curator Sasson KUNG’s tireless communication, many exciting prize-winning designs at Brno have the opportunity to come to Taiwan for the exhibition. The curator of the biennial is also invited to host seminar in Taiwan and share the experience of promoting the biennial over the past five decades, which original designs and content industry of Taiwan can learn from.

Typography and Type Design Visually Conveying the Collective Consciousness of Citizens

Since its establishment in 1918, people of Czechoslovakia had been searching for “visual national position,” which generated the need for new typefaces. Joe CHANG, one of the curators of the exhibition, is also a renowned European type designer. To select works for this exhibition, he has personally travelled to Czech and Slovakia for field research, visiting museums, design centers, academies, and film associations, and brought back nearly 50 kg of cultural publications. Through the design of the typefaces, people can perceive the impressive resilience of the people of Czechoslovakia as they insisted on originality in a tumultuous period of time.

Birth of the Exhibition’s New Typeface Limited Edition Tickets Ignite Craze of Collection

Although Czech and Slovak are now two independent states, their cultural developments have maintained a close relation, which has inspired Joe CHANG’s designs of the main visual and Chinese typeface of the exhibition. He adopts contemporary Slovakian typeface Klimax as the main element, using lines of equal thickness to present the positive and negative spaces of the characters; then he converts the diacritical marks of the two nations into the logo to echo their courses of civilization that share the same origin. Elements of the national flags of the two countries are used as the main colors of the main visual, and Taiwan Design Museum has specially produced limited edition tickets, which will definitely ignite a craze of collection.
