Beyond Your Imagination: The Exhibition “Beyond BAUHAUS” at TDM

2019 marks the centenary of Bauhaus school. Since the founding of the school in 1919 by German architect Walter Gropius, an attempt to recover from the anxiety and grief after the war. With utopian ideas and realistic ” New materialism ” spirit, he has started a new design movement.
Gathering the design elites from all over the world to create a new design movement, they do not seek the answers but look into the beginning , distinguish the basic elements of design, and establish a visual language. Their goal is not to create works to fill the art museum, but to experiment and explore, collect experiences and grasp the essence of design.
The Bauhaus School cultivated more than one thousand students in just 14 years. These pioneers had created a new design movement after the war, which bloomed in the 20th century. But after one century, the Bauhaus become an abstract design language to the general public, become a marketing branding, and the school which shortly mentioned in design courses.
On the topic of “Beyond Bauhaus”, this exhibition invites designers from various profession and countries, to analyze their design works and rethinking the Bauhaus spirit from. With the aim to reproduce the Bauhaus social experiment, we decode the basic elements from the most daily perspective of “Night Market”, hoping to brings the visitors walking into the Bauhaus thinking space, inspire the visitors with a new angle to observe their daily life. Bauhaus has created a universal design language, and making design not just an abstract word, but more like a spoken language with logic.
Through the exhibition, we hope the visitors would understand that, “perhaps you don’t know what Bauhaus is, but we are living with Bauhaus.” Bauhaus is not an utopia that is unreachable but it does exist in our life and happening around the world. Even after 100 years, most school still follows Bauhaus education system, like workshops and industry-academic cooperation; In Industrial manufacturing, they apply modularization; In design thinking, we can see the philosophy of functionalism, less is more approach. In the modern age where information explodes every minute, the contemporary designers will see the needs for society, and combine arts, designs and technologies to create the objects which can pay tributes to the society in an efficient way, and achieve the goal of benefiting the human and pushing the development of the world.
