A Lifelong Dedication to Promoting Keelung’s Seafood
Keelung District Fishermen ‘s Association X Fengworks Design Office
The current General Director of Keelung Fishermen’s Association, Wen-Chin Chen used to work at National Fishermen’s Associaotion Taiwan for 8 years. He tried to bring experience back to Keelung. After many interviews, Fengworks Design Office has developed gift packaging designs that contain both history and quality by focusing on Keelung Harbor as a brand.
One of the designs uses patterns to depict local stories, while another uses bright color planning in combination with surging waves to portray fresh prawns that look as vivid as though they were alive. As a local from Keelung’s Nuannuan District, Chen hopes to add memorable characteristics and quality to the freshness of Keelung’s seafood through packaging designs.
The Freshest Flavors in Badouzi
Shi Zhi Yi X UID Create
Restaurant Shi Zhi Yi’s owner’s wife Xiao Qian moved to Badouzi when she married three years ago. In addition to fresh seafood, Shi Zhi Yi’s special menu includes freshly baked “fossil pancake” and “flying fish roe turnip cake”. Xiao Qian asked Jimmy from UID Create, who also came to Keelung after getting married, to redesign the packaging and enhance the fossil pancake’ wrapper since their edges were susceptible to being crushed.
The packaging was improved by using diamond-shaped patterns that symbolize fishing nets, as well as other patterns that emphasize Keelung’s unique characteristics. The new packaging in addition to the overall corporate identity branding have enriched Badouzi’s local image.
From Keelung to the Globe—New Packaging for a 17-Year Classic
Bonjour Bakery X POSINEGA DESIGN
Bonjour Bakery set off from Keelung 17 years ago. The squid and cuttlefish bread that was specially made during the bakery’s first year is still a best-selling product today. Creative Director Jimmy chopped up the bread and dried it to make delicious snacks. The Creative Director of Posinega Design, Sosi, has redesigned its packaging through handpainted strokes.
Surrounded by cruise ships that enter Keelung Harbor, dozens of young chefs that symbolize Bonjour Bakery can be seen pulling a giant squid on a carriage and striding proudly. The affection for Keelung that Jimmy has built up over the past decade has made him stay in Keelung. Just like the young chefs in the illustration, Jimmy hopes to use food to take people on a tour of Keelung.
Keelung Flavors: Local Beer and Dishes
Dafang Co. Ltd. X Designer S.C.Liang
In order to find Taiwan’s local wine culture, Nelson, the CEO of Dafang Co. Ltd., has settled down in Keelung with his partner Cindia to explore the local wine culture. Nelson worked on developing “Ma Ling,” and used different local ingredients such as Chinese treeberry to brew seasonal beer. Combining the beer with tasteful meals on the mountain has attracted many visitors to come and experience local beer and foods.
This has promoted local consumption in Keelung. Moreover, Nelson invited two illustrators-Sauce and S.C. Liang-to create special beer labels for the beer. Their pen strokes express local memories as they tell Keelung’s stories through the beer.
A New Atmosphere in Traditional Markets—A Grand Tour of Keelung’s Mountains and Seas
Mini Market Cafe X AQUA design
Minimarket Cafe is located in one of the stalls of a traditional market. Xiao Yu not only dreams about coffee, but also about returning to a simpler lifestyle. Since Xiao Yu is always surrounded by a bunch of cats, she originally wanted to introduce the freshness of the fish at the market to others by using the theme of “a fishing cat’s love for fish.”
However, she is also proud of Keelung’s impressive landscape of mountain, sea, and rain. Xiao Yu works on developing a new set of tableware in collaboration with AGUA Design. She expects to present every bite of Nuannuan’s flavor in handcrafted potteries.
