Preliminary design research begins in Fengshan, laying the foundation for Taiwan's first railway bento experience center in 2030.

 

For many people in Taiwan, the TR Bento is more than just a meal—it is a shared memory woven into everyday life. It has accompanied generations of travelers through school, work, and countless journeys, offering warm, nourishing meals that people could always count on. From the calls of vendors on station platforms to the evolution of regional ingredients and local food traditions, the TR Bento reflects the story of Taiwan's railway culture and everyday life.

Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI) conducted the preliminary research and concept planning for the future TR Bento Experience Center. Through field research, observation, and interviews, the team found that many well-loved cultural destinations are rooted in familiar, authentic everyday experiences. When brands, local memories, and daily life are brought together, the ordinary can become meaningful places that people are eager to explore. For more than a century, the TR Bento has been one of those enduring connections.

 

Fengshan Station will gradually become home to Taiwan's first TR Bento Experience Center. Built around more than a century of TR Bento heritage, the center will feature immersive exhibitions, live demonstrations of the TR Bento-making process, and signature dining experiences, revealing the stories behind an everyday meal that often go unseen. From ingredient selection and production management to the expertise of chefs, nutritionists, and food production staff, visitors will gain a deeper understanding of the culture and craftsmanship behind every bento.

 

The center will connect with the Takao Railway Museum in Kaohsiung and the CHAOZHOU RAILWAY PARK in Pingtung, forming an important railway heritage corridor in southern Taiwan. Together, these destinations will help transform Fengshan Station from a transportation hub into a destination for railway heritage and cultural experiences.

Before the center officially opens, "Bento All Right!", the TR Bento Experience Store, serves as a pilot initiative and the first step toward the future experience center. Beyond introducing visitors to the culture of the TR Bento, the store also provides valuable operational insights to support the planning and development of the permanent center.
