Upgrading Wayfinding Experience in Public Hospitals: Signage System Design Guidebook Now Available for Download

To enhance the convenience and peace of mind for patients navigating hospital environments, the Taiwan Design Research Institute (TDRI), in partnership with the Hospital and Social Welfare Organizations Administration Commission, Ministry of Health and Welfare, and Taipei Hospital, has developed a set of signage system design guidelines applicable to medical institutions under the Ministry of Health and Welfare. Using Taipei Hospital as the demonstration site, the project consolidates the conceptual framework of hospital wayfinding systems and the outcomes of the demonstration design into a comprehensive guidebook.
The guidebook covers common hospital wayfinding user journeys, signage types, wayfinding design prinicples, and design strategies. Each signage and user interface was designed based on the actual condition of Taipei Hospital: signage sizes correspond to the spatial scale of the hospital, while user interfaces were optimized according to the hospital’s existing information architecture and hardware specifications.
As spatial conditions and information systems may vary across institutions, users referencing this guide are advised to adapt the content to their own context—such as adjusting signage or text sizes—to ensure usability and feasibility aligned with their facility’s needs.
